Me As A Consumer Of Music
I listen to music for most of my day; when getting
ready in the morning, walking to and from school, and have it playing for the
rest of the evening if I'm at home. I mainly use Spotify to stream music from
my phone and laptop, but when there's a lesser-known artist that don't have
their songs on there I use Youtube - or whatever website they’ve published
their music on (like Bandcamp or Soundcloud). I rarely pay for music as I
stream most of what I listen to, but I will occasionally buy a physical copy of
an album to support the artist.
The genres I listen to vary, but I'll either be
listening to indie artists like Neon Indian and Florence + The Machine, or
unique rap artists like Tyler, The Creator and Kendrick Lamar. Asides from the
instrumentals, these artists often tend to tell really interesting stories in
their songs; Florence bases most of her lyrics on mythology and creates fantasy
settings within her albums, Tyler and Kendrick use different personas to
express themselves (but this is more noticeable in Tyler), and... Neon Indian
just has a very creative 80s aesthetic. I love the visuals used in each of
their music videos and the overall characters they create for themselves, and
if anything I listen to these artists more than others because of the stories
they all tell and worlds they create throughout their music.
These same reasons also apply to Gorillaz, but
there is a deeper connection with that band too. I was brought up with
alternative artists but found the band interesting and became a massive fan of them
when I was like 10 because, well, they're a cartoon band. They told a distinct
story of the members through animated music videos, arriving somewhere
different with each album - especially in Plastic Beach.
I personally think Country music is horrible, and to me most
of the songs sound cheap and tacky. I'm not the biggest fan
of heavy metal or any aggressive rock, and don't listen to the charts either,
but I’m neutral to these genres.
